Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare: The Future of Combat

This new behind-the-scenes video is all about Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s future tech. In the video, Sledgehammer Game’s Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey explain what the new technology is and how it will change the way war is fought on the digital battlefield.

Among the new technologies featured are the threat detection grenades, which illuminate enemies when thrown, the mobile barricade, a large movable shield that provides cover, the laser rifle-like directed energy weapons, and of course hover vehicles.

Perhaps the most significant new gameplay feature covered is the exoskeleton, which will enhance the player character’s abilities, making them capable of physical feats that would be impossible for a normal human. The exoskeleton will also give players access to powerful new exo-abilities, which will change up the classic Call Of Duty formula in a number of ways.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Uses Version of “Avatar 2” Facial Animation System

Sledgehammer Games using system powered by the same tech that will be used to produce James Cameron’s upcoming movie.

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare

This fall’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare uses a facial animation system powered by the same technology and techniques that will be used to produce James Cameron’s upcoming movie Avatar 2. That’s according to a teaser for Edge’s story about Advanced Warfare.

Publisher Activision previously said that Advanced Warfare will deliver a “near photorealistic” world. We’ve already seen some of the game’s facial animations, as a story trailer for Advanced Warfare got up close with actor Kevin Spacey’s impressive-looking character, Jonathan Irons.

Cameron’s original Avatar hit theaters in 2009. Avatar 2 is expected to be released in December 2016.

According to Activision, the new three-year Call of Duty development cycle meant that Advanced Warfare developer Sledgehammer Games was able to create a “near photorealistic world unlike any Call of Duty before.” At GDC 2013, Activision R&D staffers showed off some seriously staggering next-gen character models, though they cautioned that they do not represent actual game assets.

Advanced Warfare launches November 4 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. Sledgehammer Games is working on the Xbox One, PS4, and PC versions, while a studio to be named later is handling the Xbox 360 and PS3 iterations.

New Customization Items Coming for Ghosts and Black Ops 2

Ready for more Call of Duty: Ghosts Customization Items? This Tuesday, March 4, a few more pieces of content are headed to Xbox platforms, and there’s a decidedly sinister bent to this batch.

“Revenge is like a ghost.” – Vladimir Makarov

First, there’s the Makarov Legend Pack, which lets you play as one of the most notorious villains in Call of Duty history – Vladimir Makarov – in Ghosts multiplayer. The pack also gives you a special Makarov-themed Personalization Pack with a weapon camo, patch, reticle, playercard and background. Like the Price Legend Pack before it, it’s slated for a $3.99 price point.

In addition to Makarov, there are other infamous Call of Duty villain characters available for multiplayer play, too. Each will cost $1.99:

Gabriel Rorke led the Ghosts…before becoming their biggest threat.

codghosts_microitems_zakhaev

Modern Warfare antagonist Irman Zakhaev returns…with both arms.

I would call bullets hazardous materials, but be warned: the Hazmat Suit won’t actually stop them.

Also, for Call of Duty fans who continue to enjoy Black Ops II, here’s some more good news: Four new Personalization Packs will be available on Tuesday for $1.99 each. Each set offers a weapon camo, three reticles, and an animated calling card. I don’t have images of these yet, but I do have names and descriptions:

  • Beast, which is “inspired by nature’s most lethal predators”;
  • Dead Man’s Hand, influenced by Old West gunslingers and card players;
  • Octane, which aims to please racing fans; and
  • Weaponized 115, based on the Treyarch’s epic Zombies experience, Origins

All these new Call of Duty Customization Items for Ghosts and Black Ops II will be available at the “Store” option of each game’s multiplayer menu on Tuesday, March 4. Xbox platforms get it first, with other platforms to follow. There has been no date set yet.

Xbox One Twitch Livestreaming Dated, March 11

As of 11th March, the Xbox One’s Twitch app will finally support livestreaming. What’s more, it’ll allow you to join a broadcaster’s Xbox Live party while watching their stream.

Livestreaming was originally planned for launch, but was delayed “to ensure that the Twitch broadcasting experience meets all of your expectations”. Microsoft and Twitch now claim that the Xbox One Twitch app is the most “complete” you’ll find on a console.

“It’s complete integration,” Twitch CEO Emmett Shear told the Associated Press this morning, as reported by Gamasutra. “It’s exciting because we’ve never had the ability to broadcast from a console like this with such a deep level of integration. The concept of being able to join a broadcasters’ party is really cool, and it’s another step in the direction of interacting more closely with broadcasters.”

Broadcasting

  • Instantly live broadcast your games by simply speaking “Xbox, Broadcast”, or launch from within the Twitch app for Xbox One.
  • Position the webcam PIP in any corner of the screen to best fit your game.
  • Interact with broadcasters using the most lines of chat available on a console.
  • Your Xbox friends are notified when you go live.

Viewing and Chatting

  • View live gameplay from any Twitch source: Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, PS4, etc.
  • Get notifications when your favorite gamers are broadcasting so you never miss a minute.
  • For Xbox One broadcasts, you can view the broadcaster’s Xbox Live profile and send them a party request and join their game.
  • See which Xbox Live friends are broadcasting and what they’re broadcasting.
  • Partake in the chat experience, including using your subscription-based emotes and chat badges.
  • Turbo subscribers get an ad-free experience.

To whisk the hood off the elephant in this (chat)room, the PS4’s Twitch app has supported livestreaming since launch. It doesn’t allow you to join the broadcaster’s party, however. “That’s a very certain type of experience,” Xbox vice president of marketing and strategy Yusuf Mehdi observed of Sony’s offering. “For us, we thought that was too limiting for what our fans would want. Our fans really want the full next-gen service, so that’s why we decided to take our time, do it right and have it come out in this fashion.”

“This will open up the social aspect of Xbox One in a new way,” he added. “The community of Twitch is huge, and this allows us to type into that, and frankly do something that’s never been done before on consoles. You’ll be able to broadcast to any device and consume anyone’s broadcast from any device. It’s a console experience unique to the Xbox One.”

There’s Kinect support, of course. You’ll be able to start a broadcast by saying “Xbox, broadcast”. To stop, say “Xbox, stop broadcast”. What do you think? Here’s a list of Twitch app achievements.
